Rhyze Mushrooms built a mushroom farm inside a 40 ft shipping container using upcycled materials wherever they could. Their mushrooms are grown on urban waste streams that would otherwise end up in landfills, including: sawdust, coffee chaff, spent brewer’s grain, and cacao husks.
Walking as part of our investigation/critique of the fountainbridge development project along Edinburgh's Cannal side Rhyze Mushrooms invited us to their farm during its early days. Existing on a small disused development plot (owned by Edinburgh Council, who have no money to 'develop' it) Rhyze told us about how they ended us there rent free and the precarity of their existence if the council ever sold or developed the land. On our way to the farm we walked with Radical Mycology in mind, interconnecting the pedestrian underground as mycelium interconnects the web of life that makes up the forest.
